Eating Disorders: Not just for the young

Eating Disorders, such as binge eating, anorexia, and bulimia, are typically considered ailments of teenage girls or women in their 20s.  However, eating disorder symptoms are increasing in older women, and this could put them at higher risk for a multitude of health problems.  Engaging in eating disorder symptoms, such as binging, exhausts the body physically and results in devastating health consequences-no matter the age; these behaviors though, may be even more pain-staking on older women as they are at higher risk for osteoporosis, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal problems.  Older women may also not be as likely to seek out treatment on their own, particularly as there may not necessarily be a "parent-figure" encouraging or supporting one to get help.  Many women who struggle with an eating disorder during middle-older age may also be unaware of the treatment resources that exist or fear that they may be 'too old' to begin treatment during a specific point in their lives.

The good news though is that age is not a deciding factor on when recovery can or should begin.  If you or someone you love is struggling with an eating disorder, take heart in the hope that a life-free from the burden of an eating disorder-can begin at any age and at any point in one's life.

  1. This summer is when my eating disorder started, I didn't recognize it at first. I just didn't enjoy eating. Then I realized how unhealthy it was, I told friends and they said the same thing, yet I continued with it. I have gotten a lot better, but it's always there in the back of my mind. Just recently I had to write a paper about eating disorders and at first it was...very painful. It brought back memories, thoughts , and urges. But I desperately tried to stay strong, and I did. So when I saw this blog I had to read it, and you are very inspiring. You make me want to do better and self-care, you make me want to care about myself and what I'm doing to my body. Thank you so much, for hope and inspiration.

  2. This is a good post, if you are suffering from binge eating disorder, please have the guts to accept and confess to your family members that you are facing problems. This is the first step towards your recovery.
