Eating Disorders: Not just for the young

Eating Disorders, such as binge eating, anorexia, and bulimia, are typically considered ailments of teenage girls or women in their 20s.  However, eating disorder symptoms are increasing in older women, and this could put them at higher risk for a multitude of health problems.  Engaging in eating disorder symptoms, such as binging, exhausts the body physically and results in devastating health consequences-no matter the age; these behaviors though, may be even more pain-staking on older women as they are at higher risk for osteoporosis, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal problems.  Older women may also not be as likely to seek out treatment on their own, particularly as there may not necessarily be a "parent-figure" encouraging or supporting one to get help.  Many women who struggle with an eating disorder during middle-older age may also be unaware of the treatment resources that exist or fear that they may be 'too old' to begin treatment during a specific point in their lives.

The good news though is that age is not a deciding factor on when recovery can or should begin.  If you or someone you love is struggling with an eating disorder, take heart in the hope that a life-free from the burden of an eating disorder-can begin at any age and at any point in one's life.

Reserach increasing understanding of Binge Eating Disorder

Advancements in the field of eating disorder research are leading to greater understanding of these mental health diseases as well as more efficient treatment methods.   Recently, researchers from Boston University School of Medicine have explored the role of a cellular protein in the regulation of binge eating.  Experiments from this group of researchers have demonstrated that neurobiological causes may contribute to the development of binge eating.  These findings are particularly important in that they will allow for newer therapeutic treatments intended specifically for binge eating disorder.  For a serious mental health disorder that is still being understood, research findings such as these could be monumental for binge eating disorder suffers who are seeking effective and helpful treatment.  To learn more about this research study, please read this article

If you or a loved one has struggled with Binge Eating Disorder, what treatments have you felt were most therapeutic or helpful in recovery?

New Treatment For Binge Eating Disorder

An encouraging new treatment for binge eating disorder was announced on May 3, 2012 with exciting preliminary results in the Phase II clinical trial. An opioid antagonist nasal spray has been created by the Lightlake Therapeutics Inc. A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, six month Phase II trial enrolled 127 subjects for the treatment of BED (binge eating disorder). The behavior had little change in the beginning of the study, however, the effect of the nasal spray created an extinction curve over time where the benefits improved. Dr. Roger Crystal, M.D., CEO of Lightlake Therapeutics Inc. states “Lightlake is committed to research that can help us advance our treatment of BED and other addictive behavior disorders that affect millions of individuals worldwide. The data provides further evidence that Naloxone may also be a promising treatment for Bulimia Nervosa.” To read further on this thrilling research, read the attached article.

New Topics About Binge Eating Disorder to be Discussed

Though not as commonly acknowledged or recognized as Anorexia or Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder is a disease that can leave the sufferer with equally devastating consequences.  Increasing differentiation and identification of this disorder is allowing for more efficient treatment options and greater recovery outcomes for individuals struggling with this.

During the upcoming Binge Eating Disorder Association Conference, health professionals from Oliver-Pyatt Centers will discuss facets of this pertinent issue, addressing topics such as Healing from the Shame/Trauma Binge Eating Cycle as well as Eating Disorder Treatment After Bariatric Surgery.  These relevant subjects are crucial for expanding the current knowledge of Binge Eating Disorder, for both health professionals and suffer alike.  For more information about these informative presentations, please continuing reading here.
